Health and Safety policy
Brompton Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
Brompton Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks and promoting safe working practices across all removal services we provide.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We recognise that effective health and safety management is essential to the quality and reliability of our removal services. We strive to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to property through careful planning, staff training, and continuous improvement in our working methods and equipment.
Senior management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained, and reviewed regularly. All employees share responsibility for working safely, following agreed procedures, and reporting concerns or incidents without delay.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Brompton Man and Van will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards that apply to removal and transport operations. We will identify our legal duties, monitor changes in requirements, and update our procedures as necessary.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for promoting safe behaviour, ensuring that staff understand their duties, and that suitable resources are provided to manage health and safety effectively. Employees must take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others, use equipment correctly, and co-operate fully with health and safety measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will carry out risk assessments for our core activities, including domestic and commercial moves, loading and unloading vehicles, transporting goods, and working at customer premises. These assessments will identify significant hazards and set out control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to staff. These systems will include safe lifting and carrying techniques, procedures for handling bulky or awkward items, guidelines for working in confined spaces such as stairwells and corridors, and steps to prevent slips, trips, and falls during removal operations.
Manual Handling and Load Management
Manual handling is a key part of our services, and we place particular emphasis on safe lifting and carrying practices. Staff will be trained to assess loads before moving them, work in teams where appropriate, and use mechanical aids such as trolleys and lifting straps whenever it is reasonably practicable.
We will avoid unnecessary manual handling by planning moves carefully, ensuring clear access routes, and packing or stacking items in a way that reduces strain and minimises the risk of injury. Heavy or fragile items will be given special consideration and handled using appropriate techniques and equipment.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are a central part of our work and must be operated safely at all times. Brompton Man and Van will ensure that all vehicles used for removal services are properly maintained, inspected regularly, and loaded within safe weight limits.
Drivers will be competent, appropriately licensed, and familiar with safe driving practices, including defensive driving and safe loading and unloading. Loads will be secured to prevent movement during transit, and access to vehicle loading areas will be managed to protect staff, customers, and passers-by.
Workplace and Site Safety
Our staff work in a range of environments, including homes, offices, storage facilities, and shared access areas. We will assess each location for hazards such as uneven surfaces, poor lighting, restricted access, or the presence of other contractors.
Where necessary, we will put in place measures to control these risks, such as using safe access routes, protecting floor surfaces, and coordinating activities with customers or building management. Staff will keep work areas as tidy as possible, promptly remove waste materials, and store tools and equipment safely when not in use.
Equipment, Tools, and Personal Protective Equipment
We will provide suitable equipment for removal operations, including trolleys, blankets, straps, and tools for disassembling and reassembling furniture. All equipment will be maintained in a safe condition and checked regularly for damage or wear.
Where required, staff will be supplied with personal protective equipment, such as gloves, safety footwear, and high-visibility clothing. Employees are expected to use this equipment correctly, report defects, and take care of items issued to them.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All employees will receive appropriate health and safety training relevant to their role. This may include induction training, manual handling instruction, safe vehicle loading techniques, hazard awareness, and emergency procedures.
Supervisors will provide ongoing guidance and monitor working practices to ensure that training is applied in day-to-day operations. Additional briefings will be given when there are changes in equipment, work methods, or specific risks identified on a particular job.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Staff will be made aware of emergency procedures including fire safety, evacuation routes, and first aid arrangements relevant to the sites where they are working. When on customer premises, our teams will co-operate with local emergency rules and instructions.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Brompton Man and Van encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements, and participate in discussions about how to carry out removal work more safely.
This policy will be reviewed regularly, and whenever there are significant changes in legislation, our services, or the nature of the risks associated with our work. We are committed to continual improvement and to maintaining a positive health and safety culture throughout the company.
Policy Review and Availability
This Health and Safety Policy is approved by the management of Brompton Man and Van and will be reviewed periodically to ensure that it remains relevant and effective. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff.
The policy is available to employees, customers, and other interested parties on request so that our standards and expectations are clear to everyone involved in or affected by our removal services.
